Australian Fish

Fishing is one of the most popular activities in Australia. There are actually more than 4400 species of fish that occupy the Australian waterways. Most of the Australian freshwater fish are those from the Indo-Pacific marine species and have adapted to freshwater.

There are several types of fish found in Australia. Some of these include the South Australian Cobbler, Queensland Lungfish, Barramundi, and the Flathead. The South Australian Cobbler, or simply called "cobbler", is a brown-colored fish that can be found both in the eastern and western coasts of southern Australia. This type of fish is nocturnal or becomes active at night; the small cobblers eat crabs and shrimps and the larger ones settle for the other fish.

Another type of Australian fish is the Queensland lungfish, which is also known as the Burnett Salmon or the barramunda. This is actually one of the six extant lungfish species in the world and is the only member of Ceratodontidae family left.

The Barramundi, which is commonly known as Asian Seabass, is a very popular and expensive fish usually prepared in Thai cuisine. This fish has a white flesh which is mild-flavored, delicate and almost boneless, and can be prepared in many ways.

Indeed, the Australian continent is so lucky to be given such bountiful water resources. They can enjoy the gift of the coasts especially the many species of fish they have.
